MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, MacBook, iMac … Which Apple computer is best Mac for your studies? For your return, you want to equip a Mac, but you do not really know which to choose? Read without delay our buying guide to find the Mac that will fit you best.
How to choose a Mac?
Macs can seem very expensive, especially when compared to laptops of 300 €.
Therefore, what explains so high prices at Apple? The Apple brand is a point of honor to produce quality products that last over time (which can be a real asset for long studies).
However, deciding which Mac to choose is not an easy task. Indeed, we must take into account the type of studies you follow (law, foreign languages, graphics, engineering, architecture …) and of course your budget.
To help you with this task, we take a closer look at Apple’s Mac series and the offers that might be helpful.
Have the best Mac for your studies
Let’s start by talking about the Apple Store Education. It is a program dedicated to students and education staff, thanks to which you can benefit from various discounts on Apple products.
Regarding the choice of a Mac, you have to take into account that as a student, you will have to move a lot (going to the lectures, going to the library, revising during the holidays), it all about makes sense to prefer a laptop to a desktop.
The MacBook screens are, of course, smaller than the iMac. To remedy this, you can use a cheap screen or your TV, and connect this external display to your MacBook.
The MacBook Pro could easily be removed from your shopping list (if you have not already done so). It is very expensive (up to € 2,000) and very powerful. If its price does not scare you and you want to make video montages worthy of a professional, then why not.
The iMac Pro is also a powerful (and expensive) machine, and it would be excessive for a typical student.
In the vast majority of cases, it is more interesting to opt for a cheaper model, especially if you think to buy a screen, a keyboard, and a mouse.
If you are looking for a reliable model that will not malfunction every time you try to save your work, then turn to the MacBook family. She is incredibly powerful.
As you can see, Apple prizes like this because its devices are premium quality.
Let’s start with MacBook Pro; these laptops are the most expensive and most effective Macs.
The range of MacBook Pro starts at € 1,499 for the 13-inch version without Touch Bar and reached € 2,799 for the high-end version with 15-inch Touch Bar and 256 GB of storage space.
The tactile bar, although impressive, is a gadget you can do without. If the 13-inch screen is enough for you and you really want this model, then we recommend the one at 1 749 €.
It is equipped with an Intel Kaby Lake dual-core i5 processor of 7 the generation at 2.3 GHz, a RAM of 8 GB and an SSD of 256 GB of storage space.
It also features the Intel Iris plus 640 graphics processor and two Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports.
The USB Type-C replaces the USB-A, if you need to connect an external hard drive, for example, you can buy an adapter on the Apple website.
The MacBook Pro (from € 1,999) 13 inches with Touch Bar have better processors (quad-core 8th generation and are equipped with an Intel Iris Graphics 655 graphics chip. Even their display is more imposing with True Tone technology.
If you’re looking for a powerful MacBook, which will not empty your bank account and good portability, then the MacBook Air is the perfect compromise.
The MacBook Air has a 13-inch screen, and it is equipped with a dual-core Intel Core i5 processor at 1.6 GHz. You’ll have 128GB or 256GB of storage space and 8GB RAM. The base model costs $ 1,099 and the 256GB model costs $ 1,599.
The Air also has two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a headphone jack, a USB Type-C for charging (and no longer MagSafe). In addition, it has a Retina screen, unlike its previous version.
In addition to the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, Apple offers the MacBook. This 12-inch computer is thinner than the MacBook Air and has a great design. But is this the best option for students?
Starting at € 1,499, the MacBook is more expensive than a MacBook Air (from € 1,099 to € 1,599), even though its processor is lower. The base model (256 GB of storage, 8 GB of RAM) runs on a 1.2 GHz dual-core Intel Core m3 processor and an Intel HD Graphics 615 graphics processor.
It is incredibly thin and light, the thickest place is only 13.1 mm. It is 24% thinner than the MacBook Air.
If you need more memory, then there is the 512 GB MacBook at € 1,799. Its processor (1.3 GHz) is a tad more powerful than the 256 GB version, apart from that, they share the same characteristics.
The iMac may also be suitable for a student, but it is a desktop computer, so you need space and you will not be able to take it anywhere with you.
Nevertheless, you will be able to study more efficiently thanks to its 21.5-inch or 27-inch screen.
The cheapest model is at € 1,299, it has a dual-core Intel Core i5 processor 2.3 GHz, 8 GB of RAM, a hard disk of 1 TB, an Intel Iris graphics processor More 640 Graphics and a 21.5-inch screen (sRGB 1920 x 1080 pxl).
The weak point of the iMac is its hard drive; it tends to slow down the Mac, from the registration of a document to the power of the computer.
For better performance and speed, we suggest you add the 1 TB Fusion Drive or the 256 GB SSD.
The slightly more expensive iMac (€ 1,499) has very different characteristics. It comes with a 3.6GHz 8th Gen Intel Core i3 processor, 8GB RAM, and a 1TB hard drive.
It’s the perfect tool for graphic designers and video editors as it combines a large storage capacity, a good processor and an excellent Retina 4K P3 display (4069 x 2304 pxl).
Against € 1,699, you’ll get an even faster 21.5-inch iMac, and an 8G Intel Core i5 8GH Core processor. You will have 8 GB of RAM and a Fusion disk of 1 TB. The price is on the rise, but it is a beautiful machine.
If you have the right budget and want an even more powerful and large iMac, then there is the 27-inch version with 5K Retina display, starting at € 2,099.
The Mac mini is an excellent Mac at a low price. Its entry-level model is $ 899, making it by far the most affordable Mac. It has a 3.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i3 processor, perfect for everyday tasks.
If you can afford it, then go for it. You just have to ask around for a keyboard, a mouse and a screen.
You can also connect it to your TV, although we do not advise you to write a dissertation or internship on a TV screen.
If you already have student status or are in your first year of university, then take advantage of the discounts offered by the Apple Store Education program. It is accessible throughout the year.
What is the perfect Mac for a student?
In our opinion, the best Mac for a student is the MacBook Air. It is light, fast, powerful, and all for a price starting at € 1,099. We believe that it offers very good value for money.
If you are looking to save a few euros (a little over $ 100 sometimes), then keep an eye on Apple refurbished products. The Macs are completely refurbished and have a one-year warranty.
For the most part, the MacBook Air might not be the first choice, since the Pro and MacBook are a little more powerful and solid. But, it has the advantage of having USB-A ports, a featherweight (perfect for its transport) and to be less expensive.
If you can spend more, then we recommend the MacBook Pro without the Touch Bar.
To carry your Mac and your books, you will surely need a good backpack; we have selected for you the best of the market.
